The official name of our country is the Republic of the Russian Federation. There are 22 republics in it. The first Russian president was Boris Yeltsin. Vladimir Putin is the Russian president at the present moment. Michael Mishustin is Prime Minister. The highest low of our country is the Constitution. Russia stopped being a monarchy and became a republic in 1917. The Russian national government has three branches: the President and his helpers, The Council of Ministers with the Prime Minister, and the Federal Assembly or the Parliament. The Parliament consists of two houses: the upper House and the lower House or the Federal Council and the State Duma.

The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It lies both in Europe and Asia. Its total area is more than 17 million square kilometers. Its population is about 150 million people. The country is washed by twelve seas (the Baltic sea, the Barents sea and others) and three oceans (the Arctic, the Pacific and the Atlantic ocean). Russia borders on eighteen states: Poland, Finland, the Baltics, Kazakhstan, China and others. There are a lot of rivers and lakes in Russia. The Volga is the biggest river in Europe. Lake Baikal is the deepest fresh-water lake in the world. There are several mountain chains on the territory of our country: the Urals, the Altai, the Caucasus and others. The Ural Mountains divide Russia into the European and Asian parts of the country.

The capital of our country is Moscow. It is a very old city which was founded by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky in 1147. Some other major cities of Russia are Saint-Petersburg, Novosibirsk, Samara, Yekaterinburg and so on.
The main symbols of our country are a flag, a double-headed eagle and a hymn. The flag has three stripes: white, blue and red. They mean sincerity, honesty and bravery. The eagle watches both to the East and to the West. The hymn of Russia is “The Patriotic Song”. The music is written by A. Aleksandrov, the words are written by S.Mikhalkov. Russian people are very talented. The most famous writers are: A.Pushkin, L.Tolstoy, F.Dostoyevsky and others. The most famous composers are P.Tchaikovsky, M.Glinka, S. Rakhmaninov and others. The most famous artists are I. Levitan, V.Surikov, V. Vasnetsov and others. musicians, cosmonauts are well- known all over the world.

Russian people like to drink tea. There is a nice tea ceremony when people sit around the table with a samovar placed in the middle. They drink it with homemade jam, baranki and pirozhki . The main dishes of the traditional menu are blini with honey, caviar or sour cream, different soups like shchi and borshch, pelmeni served with mustard, butter or vinegar. When tourists arrive in Russia they enjoy Russian cuisine and buy traditional souvenirs like Matryoshka dolls, painted mugs, plates and spoons from the village of Khokhloma and Palekh boxes. They buy amber, T-shirts, furs, art books or badges.

Russian people celebrate different holidays. The 1(first) of January is the first New Year`s Day. People decorate New Year trees and have joyful parties. The 7(seventh) of January is Orthodox Christmas. People have all-night services in church. When people celebrate Maslenitsa, they mark the beginning of spring and Lent. People make pancakes, sing songs and visit their friends. The 23(twenty-third) of February is the Motherland Defender`s Day. This holiday is devoted to soldiers and officers who defended our country or are in the Army at the present moment. The 8(eighth) of March is the International Women`s Day. Men and young boys try to please their mothers, sisters and friends by giving them presents, flowers and chocolates.

Easter is the main Orthodox festival which is celebrated in April or in May. People colour eggs and make cakes on that day. They have all-night services in church. The 1(first) of May is the Day of Spring and Labour. Russian people prefer to go out and take part in all kinds of outdoor activities. The 12(twelfth) of June is Russia Day, we started celebrating this holiday when the new state was formed in 1991. The 4(fourth) of November is the day of people`s Unity. These are the most important holidays which people have in Russia.
At the end I would like to say that I live in a great and rich country and I`m proud of our long history, rich traditions, unique culture and our Russian spirit.
