Vladimir Afanasyevich Obruchev

September 28 (October 10), 1863, village Klepenino, Tver Province — June 19, 1956, Moscow)

Was a Russian geologist, paleontologist, geographer, science fiction writer (author of the famous novels "Sannikov Land" and "Plutonia"), court counselor, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1929), Hero Socialist Labor (1945), winner of the Stalin Prize (1941, 1950).

In 1887 he published his first scientific work "Sands and Steppes of the Transcaspian region", which was awarded the silver medal of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society.

After the 1905 Revolution, Obruchev was a member of the Constitutional Democratic Party

On April 3, 1930, at a meeting of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Academician V. A.

Obruchev was elected the first director of the Geological Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences, then located in Leningrad[19]. Approved in this position by the General Meeting of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From February 23, 1933, he headed the Department of Lithogenesis and Geology of Minerals. At Obruchev's personal request, on October 20, 1933, the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences dismissed him from the post of director of the Geological Institute[20] and entrusted the temporary performance of these duties to Academician A. A. Borisyak.

Author of more than 450 scientific papers on Earth sciences In 1914, in the journal "Nature" Obruchev began to publish popular scientific articles on geology and paleontology.
