Secondary school No. 1 has a pre-war history. In 1935 year was the first issuance its pupils. The school is proud of its graduates-heroes of the Soviet Union Igor Kornev, Alexander Rumyantsev, Dmitry Rumyantsev, Alexander Nevsky, Yuri Gagarin

The history of the modern middle school No. 1 starts in 1917, she was a seven-year period (average at the time). Until 1920 it was the only secondary school in the city.

Before the war, the school was located in the building of the Alexander women's gymnasium, which during the war was adapted for the evacuation hospital and destroyed in 1943. In the postwar period in Gzhatsk there was only one secondary school, which was located in two adapted buildings on Sovetskaya street.

From 1947 to 1949, Yuri Gagarin studied at secondary school No. 1. At that time, the school "rented a corner" in the famous historical building of our city, which today received its original name "House of merchant Tserevitinov".

Since 1956, the school began to live in its own building on Lenin street.
On April 14, 1961, the school was named after Yuri Gagarin.

Yuri Gagarin visited his native school three more times: on November 26, 1961, in 1963 and in June 1966.

In the same year the school opened a Museum, which in 1976 was awarded the title of "School Museum" and awarded the certificate N 2308. The Museum was visited by hundreds of delegations from the country. All Soviet cosmonauts were guests of the Museum. Excursions in foreign languages are offered here.

And in 1990, a large modern three-storey building with a gym and a swimming pool was added to the school. The pool was built as part of the school itself, and they are still connected by a warm corridor. From this time, in our opinion, the modern history of school No. 1 begins.
