O. Henry — a master of short stories

O. Henry (1862-1910)
real name — William Sidney Porter
had many jobs during his life
started to write short stories in prison to support his daughter
in 1901 changed his name to O. Henry

O. Henry's stories are split into five groups:
The South
The West
Central America
Prison
New York ( it has 140 stories). O. Henry called New York «Baghdad-on-the-Subway».

Surprise ending is one of the themes in O' Henry's stories. The reader is under suspense.
For example, this is shown in «The Gift of the Magi». A husband sells his watch to buy his wife some combs, and his wife cut her hair to buy her husband a chin for his watch.

Coincidence plays a key role in most of O. Henry's stories. It adds another element of humour.
For example, in «After twenty Years» two friends have plans to meet. But one has learned something about the other and this leads to an unexpected events.

Local color is one of his favourite techniques. He puts out realistic dialogues from his childhood, his own history.

O. Henry's vocabulary contains a lot of slang words and phrases.
It makes him favorable to the general public.
