Plan.
1. Travelling.
2. Travelling by rail.
3. Travelling by air.
4. Travelling by ship.
5. Travelling by car.
6. Hiking.
Read the following passage about transport and underline all the means of transport you can find.
Since people first realised that they could travel faster from one place to another using a means of transport rather than walking, they have developed an amazing number of ways of getting around. From camels to the space shuttle, from horses to jets, we love to travel. Carts pulled by horses once took people to market and now people drive to supermarkets in their cars. Boats first took people out to fish and now submarines float deep beneath the waves with huge cruise ships and stylish sailboats above them. People first flew in hot-air balloons and now they fly into space aboard rockets.
To be continued
We also use means of transport to move goods and materials from one area to another. Ships take cargo and oil tankers take fuel around the world. Trucks, lorries and vans move goods on the roads while electric trains and diesel trains do it on rails, just like steam trains used to do. People are moved from one place to another every day to work, some of them going by underground, others by bus, tram or taxi, and some making their own way by bicycle or motorbike. They go on holiday by plane, by ferry, by hydrofoil, or by coach. From the poorest person going home by donkey to the richest going home by limousine, people's lives are dependent on many different means of transport.
Journey, trip, travel, voyage
A trip is shorter than a journey: What was the journey like? We had a long journey by coach from the north to the south of the country. We took a trip / went on a trip to the beach last weekend, [go on a trip suggests an organized short excursion, whereas a trip or have a trip could be something you do yourselves in your own car.
Travel is a general word. It is a noun and a verb: Travel broadens the mind. How did you travel round Australia? We hitch-hiked. Note: We never say 'a travel'. It is an uncountable noun.
Voyage means a long journey usually by sea, though this use is quite formal. It is often used in other contexts with discovery. Learning English is a voyage of discovery!
Some words connected with travel
Last week he flew to New York. It was an early-morning flight. The plane was to take off at 6 a.m. and land at 7 a.m. The plane was delayed because of the fog. Air passengers often suffer such delays.
Trains always run on time here. You have to change trains at Crewe.
We are sailing on the QE2. It sets sail at noon. It will dock in New York at 6 p.m. I hope the sea won't be rough - I might be seasick.
The ship was wrecked. The passengers were marooned on a desert island.
Our car does 10 km to the litre. It goes quite fast. We can usually overtake other cars.
The car swerved into the middle of the road to avoid the cyclist.
He backed/reversed the car into the drive and parked in front of the house.

Passengers get their tickets in the Booking office and learn necessary information about trains.
There is the movement, the excitement, the gaiety of people going away or waiting to meet friends.
Modern trains have comfortable compartments with upper and lower berths, a small table between them and a luggage rack above.
Carriages with numbered reserved seats are very popular with passengers because they are very cheap.
The words in the box are all to do with travelling by train. Look them up in your dictionary to check the meaning and the pronunciation, then fill in the diagram.

More and more people are using the aircraft as a means of transport, either for business or private reasons. Flying has become as safe as never before.
A modern highway links the capital with the passenger terminal that allows reaching the airport by public transport, taxi , mini-taxi or car fast and in time. The airport offers a wide range of convenient parking facilities for many vehicles. The Paveletsky railway station is linked with the passenger terminal by Aeroexpress train.
Passengers should turn up in good time for the departure of their flight and calculate time for possible waiting time, passport and security checks.
Passengers can expect to receive the most comfortable conditions: business lounges, special facilities for mothers with children, VIP facilities, a special service for disabled and smokers - all this is at their disposal! They may use numerous services offered at the airport: do some shopping, have a cup of coffee at a cafe, watch a movie at a cosy waiting hall.
Passengers can check information about their flight on the flight information display. Their numbers are indicated at it.
Each airport has its own check-in time rules. For instance, at Sheremetyevo-2 passenger check-in begins 2 hours and 30 minutes and its deadline is forty minutes before the departure.
Departing from the airport, passengers can wrap up their luggage or leave it at the luggage office. Above the limit or oversized luggage, as well as transportation of animals or plants requires special permission.
When boarding international flights, passengers go through customs control, passport control, and after security control get to a so called clean area – isolated area where passengers wait for boarding to start.
Passengers travelling in Russia go through the security control and then get to the clean area.
Modern airports don’t use buses any more. Passengers can reach the plane through the special corridor.
One corridor is used by passengers boarding the plane, the other one deals with passenger luggage.
Modern airplanes are very comfortable and try to present various kinds of service to their passengers
The following sentences describe what you do when you go to an airport to catch a plane, but they have the wrong order.

Every year a magazine called Executive Travel organizes a competition to find the Airline of the Year.
Travellers from all over the world
are invited to vote for the most efficient, the most punctual, the safest and the friendliest airline. The winner in 1985 was British Airways.
The competition asked travellers what was the most important for them from an airline, and the results were as follows:
The competition also invited travellers to tell their most horrific stories of the nightmare side to international travel.
Replies included six hijacks, fifty-three cases of engine failure or trouble with the landing gear, eleven lightning strikes, twenty-three bomb scares, thirteen cases of food poisoning,
eleven near misses and two collisions with airport trucks.
Bad flying experiences begin on the ground, naturally. One American airline managed to double-book an
25 entire 747, but this is nothing compared to what happened on an internal flight on a certain African airline. The flight had been overbooked three times. The local military sorted the problem out by insisting that all passengers with boarding cards should run round the plane twice, the fastest getting the seats
An overbooked flight that was going from Heathrow to America gave one traveller a bit of a shock. Dressed only in trousers, shirt and socks, he had been allowed by the stewardess to leave the aircraft to see if he could get a colleague aboard
He returned a few minutes later to find the 747xclosed up and about to start moving — with his shoes, wallet, passport and luggageinside. Banging frantically on the door got him back inside. A similar event was seen by a businessman on a flight from Bangladesh. Passengers were waiting for take-off when there was
50 sudden hysterical hammering on the door. At first the cabin crew paid no attention. The hammering continued. When the door was finally opened, the pilot got in.
One frequent flier lost a certain amount of confidence when the cabin staff asked him to sit in the lavatory during take off, so that they could occupy the seats
nearest the emergency exit. Another lost faith in
pilots navigational skills when passengers were given lifeboat drill on a flight between London and
Manchester.
For nervous fliers, a journey to be avoided was one between Garwick and Montpellier, where the in-flight entertainment consisted of watching pieces of the engine falling off.
I Another passenger was asked to hold the aircraft door closed at take-off and landing.
Baggage is a rich source of horror stories. There was the unlucky traveller who left Chicago in minus-23 weather, he was going to an important meeting in Dallas, where the temperature was 80-plus. Unfortunately his suitcase had one to LA, where it spent the next two days. The customers he was trying to press were more than a little feed to see him going round in a • suit, heavy overcoat and fur hat
Look at the list of disasters in previous tables and explain
Which happened on the ground?
Which happened in the air?
Which could have been both on the ground and in the air?
How many disasters are described?
Why did some passengers have to run round a plane?
Why did a passenger and a pilot have to knock on the plane door to get in?
Why was it surprising to have a lifeboat drill on a flight from
London to Manchester?
What does in-flight entertainment usually consist of?
Was this experience entertaining?
Why was the Dallas businessman inappropriately dressed?
What do you think?
The competition was answered by very experienced travellers.
Why do you think they put safety so far down on their list of importance?
Why do airlines overbook?
Why do you think the cabin staff on one flight wanted to sit near the emergency exit?
Which of the stories were funny but dangerous?
Which were funny but not dangerous?
What is the most important
from an airline for you?
Put the following in the order of importance
safety
comfort
punctual departures and
arrivals
good food and drink
attentive cabin staff
Work in pairs.
Student A You have just had one of the terrible experiences described in the article. Tell Student В about it. Use your imagination to add more detail.
Student В Listen to Student A and ask questions to get more information.
Begin like this:
Student A I've just had a terrible journey!
Student В Why? What happened?
Student A Well, I was going ...

At sea - a bedroom is a cabin, a bed is a bunk, the kitchen on a ship is a galley, right starboard and left is port and the group of people who work on the ship is called the crew. These terms are also used for an aircraft. Sailors also refer to their vessels as “she” rather than 'it'.
For many people there is no travel so fine as by ship. They love to feel the deck under their feet, to see the rise and fall of the waves, to feel the fresh sea wind blowing in their face and hear the cry of the sea-gulls. And what excitement, too, there is in coming into the harbour and seeing round them all the steamers, cargoships, sailing-ships, rowing-boats.
And what excitement, too, there is in coming into the harbour and seeing round them all the steamers, cargoships, sailing-ships, rowing-boats.
A big sea port is a very exciting place. You can see the passengers passing up the gangway and people seeing them off.
Some people like a sea voyage. They can breathe the rich sea air, look at the harbour. Some prefer to stay on deck, some remain in their cabins. They can enjoy a beautiful sunset at sea. People can see different towns, beautiful monuments to great people, beautiful nature and places full of wonders. They learn more about people and their traditions.
Think over.

2. What are the advantages of a sea-voyage?
3. What kind of people usually object to travelling by sea?
4. What do you think about it?

Nina: Oh, Dad was all right. He's an exceptionally good sailor.
Lena: Did you touch at Spain?
Nina: No, we didn't. We only saw its coast from the deck.
It didn't look very inviting, rather bare and monotonous in fact.
Lena: And did you bathe in the Mediterranean?
Nina: Not only there, but in the Atlantic Ocean besides. There are wonderful beaches
at some places on the western coast of France. Swimming is just delightful there.
Lena: Well, I'm glad that your journey was a success.

The petrol and diesel is easily available in Russia and there are generally 4 types on sale: 95 ( that's what you use for most foreign cars - unleaded) 92 , 80 or 76 (for old Russian cars), and diesel fuel. There might sometimes be problems with the quality of the fuel, so it's better to use petrol stations that have some sort of brand name (BP, TNK, LukOIL are among the best ones).
The best way to get to know any new place is of course to travel along the local roads. To make it easier for travellers to find the best roads, they can use the route planner. And if for some reason you get lost, the local people will be very happy to help you find your way.

Driving in New York can be a challenging and nerve-wreaking experience. It is best to avoid driving and take public transportation.
However, if you have no other choice, the following steps will help you get your destination with a cooler head on your shoulders.
1. Be Alert. New York is a pedestrian dominated city. Wherever you are driving, there is a chance people will be walking beside you, in front of you, behind you, and anywhere else you can imagine.
2. Lights change quickly. In heavy traffic, it is all too easy to become stuck in the middle of the intersection when the light changes. To avoid this, always make sure there is enough space on the other side. If there isn't, wait behind the cross walk as not to block people from walking when the light changes.
3. More so than others, city drivers tend not to use turn signals. This can be jarring if you're not used to it. Just expect it, and be pleasantly surprised when your fellow drivers signal that they're going to cut you off. Sense of humor is the key.
4. Let them honk. New York is a fast paced city. It is common to be honked at the very same second the light turns green. Don't feel obligated to step on the gas. Take it at your own pace. Chances are you'll have to slam on the brakes in a few nanoseconds anyway.
5. Car theft. Leave nothing valuable showing in the driver's cab. When placing belongings into the trunk, do so before finding a parking spot. Many car burglars hide and watch people place valuables into the trunk then strike after the driver has left. If something is valuable to you, carry it with you! Some people leave nice signs informing robbers that there's nothing valuable inside the car.
6. No right turn on red in NYC! In every other city in the United States you are allowed to make a right turn on a red light after a full stop. However, in New York City this is illegal, unless otherwise noted by a traffic sign.
7. If you're looking for parking, congratulations! You've made it to your destination. Take a deep breath. This could take awhile. If you don't have time to look for a space, at least 20 minutes, put it in a garage. Otherwise, start at your desired location and work your way out. When you finally find a space be sure to read all the signs on the block. The sign that applies to your space might be at the other end of the block.

Hiking boots are footwear specifically designed for the sport of hiking. They are arguably the most important hiking gear since their quality and durability can determine a hiker's ability to move farther, faster, and safer. Hiking boots are constructed to provide comfort for miles of walking over rough terrains, and protect the hiker's feet against water, mud, rocks, and other wilderness obstacles. Most hiking boots are also designed for other outdoor activities such as backpacking, climbing, mountaineering, trail running, hunting, and casual outdoor wear.
Walking, often among hills or mountains, as recreational sport. It represents an activity in its own right and also figures in backpacking, camping, hunting, mountaineering, and orienteering. Hiking programs are offered by youth groups and other organizations, such as the U.S. Wilderness Society. Trails are preserved in most U.S. federal and state parklands. Most European cities have hiking trails outside them. One of the longest U.S. hiking trails is the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

On one day last summer, drivers and passengers going to the south coast were forced to wait for up to four hours in the midday heat.
