Celebrating the New Year in Poland
New Year in Poland is celebrated on the night of January 1. The eve of the holiday, December 31, is called St. Sylvester's Day. An ancient legend says that Pope Sylvester I destroyed the sea monster – the snake Leviathan and saved the world from destruction. The bishop died on December 31, 335. Since then, Catholics have been honoring his memory on this day.

HOW DO THEY CELEBRATE THE NEW YEAR IN POLAND ?
Poles spend New Year's Eve noisy and fun. Families arrange a luxurious dinner at home, invite guests, go to ski or foreign resorts. Young people prefer to go out to parties in clubs and restaurants or join mass celebrations on the streets and squares of cities. Masquerades and balls, which are popular among the residents of the country, open from December 31.

Traditions and rituals
On New Year's Eve, Polish residents put their homes in order, distribute debts, forgive offenses.
Poles believe in sayings: "Nowy rok jaki, cały rok taki" ("As you meet the New Year, you will spend it"), "Na nowy rok pogoda, będzie w polu uroda" ("There will be good weather for the New Year – there will be a harvest in the field"), "Nowy rok nastaje, każdemu ochoty dodaje" ("The New Year is coming, it gives everyone a hunt").
On the first day of the new year, people try to wake up as early as possible and get their right leg out of bed. It symbolizes early awakening and good luck throughout the year

Festive table
The Poles' New Year's table amazes with its abundance. Housewives try to cook 12 dishes, where each symbolizes one of the months of the year. The main traditional dish is baked carp. In the family, the head of the fish is given to the owner of the house as a sign of respect, and the scales fall into his wallet, which symbolizes wealth. The festive menu includes mushroom soup, barley porridge with prunes, traditional bread in the form of figures of animals and birds. For dessert, the hostess serves chocolate cake, honey cookies with nuts (fafernukha), donuts with jam. Champagne and gzhanets, hot wine with spices, are popular among alcoholic beverages.
