Лимерики

Лимерики – это короткие комические стихи, в пяти строках описывающие какое-нибудь нелепое или нереальное происшествие.

Сюжет лимерика строится обычно следующим образом:

В первой строке говорится, кто и откуда
Например:
There was an Old Man of the South,
Who had an immederate mouth;
Immederate – неумеренный.

Во второй строке говорится, что сделал:

Например:
But in swallowing a dish,
That was quite full of fish,
swallowing – глотать,
dish – посуда.

А далее – что из этого вышло.

Например:
He was choked, that Old Man of the South.
to choke – поперхнуться.

Но главное в таком стихе – это абсурдность, или, если хотите, некий парадоксальный смысл, присутствующий в нем.

Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the Lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger

Одна хохотушка-девица
Любила кататься на львице.

There was a Young Man of Peru
Who wanted to ride a kangaroo
But when he came to the zoo,
There was no kangaroo,
And that saved the man of Peru.

There were some grey little mice
Who wished to become very wise,
They took books on biology,
Botany and psychology –
And ate all of them slice by slice!

There was a Young Man of Sibai
Whose legs were as thin as kurai,
When he paced in a lane,
People thought he’s a crane,
That exhausted Young Man of Sibai.

There was an Old Lady whose sack
Was always filled up with chak-chak.
When they said, “Give me one”
She exclaimed, “You’ll got none!”
That admirer of tasty chak-chak.

There was an Old Bashkir whose horse
At races was always the first.
When presented with sheep,
He growled, ”Why not a jeep?”
That indignant Old Man with a horse.

There was an Old Man in the Kurultai
Whose speech was as sweet as a lullaby.
When he spoke, all reposed,
Someone snored, someone dozed,
Such a sweet was his “speech-lullaby”.

There was a Young Person named Nafis,
Who drank constantly gallons of koumiss.
Till Mom cried in despair,
“I detest milking mare!
Go and milk her yourself, dear Nafis!”

There was an Old Bashkir whose money
Was exclusively wasted on honey.
When he died all the bees
Flew away from the trees
To mourn over the owner of honey.

There was an Old Man of Baimak,
Who ate nothing except bishbarmak.
As his belly grew big
He resembled a pig
That gluttonous Old Man of Baimak.

There was a Young Man of Tuimas,
Who was dreaming of tasting toukmas,
When they offered him noodles,
He cried, “You are doodles !”
That umbrageous Young Man of Tuimas.

There was an Old Lady from Ufa,
Who was crazy about the UFO.
Watching them in the sky,
“Take me, please, for a drive!”
Screamed the crazy Old Lady of Ufa.

Glossary
Baimak—a town in Bashkortostan.
Bishbarmak—national dish of mutton eaten with five(“bish”) fingers(“barmak”).
Chak-chak—national pastry.
Honey—beekeeping is an ancient occupation of the Bashkirs.
Horse races—the obligatory part of the sabantui, the national festival of the Bashkirs.
Koumiss—fermented mare’s milk, national beverage.
Kurai—a national musical instrument like a flute.
Kurultai—World Bashkir Nation congress.
Sibai—a town in Bashkortostan.
Toukmas—Bashkir national dish of homemade noodles.
